Stittsville – Aug 4

Greg and Leslie took us on a drive to a quaint little village called Merrickville that is a bit south east from Stittsville.  Merrickville is on the Rideau River and according to their chamber of commerce is:

Merrickville, also dubbed ‘the Jewel of the Rideau’, has become a favourite weekend getaway spot on the gorgeous Kingston-Ottawa Rideau Heritage Route. Located near the mid-point of the canal system, Merrickville evokes fond memories of times gone by. You won’t find any parking meters or traffic lights here but you might find the Town Crier and very friendly villagers.

DSC_6234 DSC_6226According to the museum the Rideau Canal System has 24 lock stations that has 47 locks and is 202 KM long.  It was built in 6 years opening in 1832.  I’m pretty sure they didn’t have huge earth movers to help them.  Quite a feat to complete so quickly!

There was a boat going through the lock as we were there.  The Lock Master filled up this section of the lock and then let this little boat through the other side.

The village is very quaint.  Nice little shops and restaurants.  We wandered around for a bit.  Watched a glass blower in action and did some geocaching.
