September 10, 2017 – Kinsale to Wexford

We had rain here overnight.  Our hostess Bernie tells us that they have had very little rain in this area.  It seems very different than just the peninsula to the north (Dingle) where we experienced a lot of rain during our drive around it the other day.

We have breakfast with the Chauffeur/Tour Guide.  We discover that his name is Dermot.  I don’t recall how the conversation started, but he tells us how the Irish licence plates work.  The first three numbers, indicate the year of the car.  At first, it was only 2 digits, but when 2013 was approaching the car industry was worried that no one would buy a 2013 car as the licence plate would begin with 13.  The government made a concession, by adding a 1 or a 2 to the year to indicate the car was licensed in the 1st half of the year or the 2nd half of the year.  The next character or two indicates the county in which the car is licensed.  In the photo below both cars are licensed in Dublin.  The final numbers are serialized number indicating that this Renault is the 22,558th car licensed in Dublin for 2017.  These plates remain with the car forever.   If you sell the car, the plate goes with it.  I look at the cars and plates differently now.  I know just how old it is and where it began it’s licensed life!!  “)

Some people need parking lessons. Earlier today we saw a woman try 2 spots, both way too small for her car. The second attempt she hit another parked car. Sheesh!!

We leave Bernies Golden Garden and drive down to the town and park our car in order to walk to George Fort on the point.  We find the parking along the port jammed with campers and trailers taking advantage of what must be free spots.  They park over 3 or spots.  Thankfully they leave us a spot!

We are entering an area called Scilly.  It is pronouced “Silly”.  We come across this sign and are reminded of Monty Python Silly Walk!!  🙂  🙂

We begin our walk towards George Fort along a very nice sea wall walk.  We come across an number of gates and doors that I find intriguing so here is my gate photo essay 🙂

The path is quite beautiful.

It begins to blow and rain, so we decide to head back to the car.  On the way we find this sign that we somehow missed on the way in.

We head for a town called Youghal.  Dermot our breakfast companion recommended it.  We arrive with the wind and rain kicking.  Discover that the laundry place is closed as it is Sunday, so we continue on and aim for Wexford.  We need to do laundry again.  Most places are closed today, so Wexford has a number of places we can do it on Monday morning.  We have a place booked in Wicklow, which will give us a short day tomorrow.  We arrive in Wexford and while driving around the towns narrow streets we see a sign for “Blue Door B&B”.  We find a rare parking spot right in front.  I parallel park on the wrong side, with the help of my navigator who has gained much skill in this area!!  We ring the bell and are shown to a “family room”.  The cost is 70 euros ($103 CAD).  It includes breakfast.  The house is 200 years old and the room is massive!!

We ask our host about laundry services close by.  He offers his machines for us to use.  BONUS!!!   So we are doing laundry, having a glass of wine in our massive room and watching what is happening in Florida right now.  There is a pub around the corner that we will likely be heading to when laundry is done!!

This was our route today.
