August 19, 2017 – Hop on Hop Off Inverness & Jacobite Loch Ness

We enjoyed our breakfast at our B & B then headed toward the river Ness and the Inverness Castle.  We have noticed that there is Inverness, Invergarry, Invergordon etc.  I googled and found that “Inver” means river mouth.  Inverness is at the mouth of the river Ness.  We get to the castle that has great views to the river.

While there I look for a geocache that is nearby.  I was able to find this one 🙂

It is time to head to the Inverness bus depot to catch the Hop on Hop off bus.  For a 24 hour period we pay 16 £ for the both of us.  That is a 4 £ discount for being over the age of 60!  We are saving all kinds of £s for being old!!  We ride the bus to a place called Doghgarroch Lock.  Here there are tours called Jacobite Loch Ness Cruise.  It is a 2 hour cruise into Loch Ness.  It is 18 £ each , but we might get to see Nessie!  We decide to do it.  🙂  We have about 30 minutes to wait for the boat so we wander around the area.

We board the boat and head down the Caledonia Canal into Loch   Ness.  We have a great crew.  There is a Highlander tour guide who tells us the history of the area.  He is quite a character who breaks into song a number of times.  I have tried to add video of his performances but alas they are too large.  🙁

We pass a number of historical buildings along the way.

We finish the cruise and head back to Inverness on the bus and find a nice little place for lunch.  We have a Guinness Golden Ale and I have  curried parsnip soup.  Stu has a shrimp sandwich.

For dinner, we go for another Italian restaurant.  We find that it is a bit more difficult to find a restaurant that has a table in Inverness.  We aren’t sure if it is because we have been looking on Friday and Saturday night, but we walk alot just looking for somewhere to eat.  We are lucky to be seated in this small place tonight.  We did have another late lunch, so we aren’t starving, but think we need to eat something.  We have a couple of appetisers and feel a bit guilty for taking up a table when they are turning people away constantly.   The food was really great.  We had our first Scotch Whiskey since arriving.  A very nice end to another great day!!

Tomorrow we are being picked up at 9:30 for an Outlander Tour.  Outlander is a series of books written by Diana Gabaldon about a Highlander named Jamie Fraser and a time traveling British woman named Claire.  There is a TV series based on the books as well.  We will see some of the locations tomorrow!!
