Villach 2 Kos – September 3, 2015 – Trains, Planes & Automobiles

DSC_7305This is our “Trains, Planes and Automobiles” day. Our only photos today are “through the train window photos” 🙂

TRAINS:
DSC_7307We start in Villach on the train. We have reserved seats in a 6 person compartment. The young man who sold us the tickets at the train station said it was best to have reserved seats as it is very busy.

DSC_7306We’re not sure if we paid extra. Our seats are the only reserved ones in our compartment and we have to evict some young people who thought they scored an empty one. Some leave but 4 stay on with us. We can tell from their conversation that they are Irish. So we strike up a conversation with them. We have Irish experience 🙂

DSC_7315They are 8 friends travelling for 3 weeks before college resumes. Staying in hostels and travelling on trains. Some are wearing bracelets that we have seen on other young people. I thought they were hostel bracelets, but it turns out they are train passes. These kids are from the Dublin area and have 1 night in Venice before flying home the next day. They were great compartment mates.

We arrive at Venice Mestre train station, the one that is closest to the airport. Following the signs for the airport shuttle we arrive at a bus station just outside the train station. Stu goes in to buy tickets. 8 Euros each. Direct bus though. Upon arrival at Marco Polo Airport we see that there is a lot of construction going on. We don’t recognize much at all. We flew home from here two years ago.

PLANES:
It is about 3PM and the airport is soooo busy. We have a very long time to kill (about 7 hours) before our flight to Kos. Stu guards our stuff and I go in search of somewhere less chaotic. We feel that we are invisible as others are just cutting across our paths intent on their own destination. Numerous times we are dodging other people that just don’t seem to notice we are there. This kind of thing makes me a little CRAZY!!

I find a cafe in the arrivals area and guide Stu back there. We sit and get a couple of beers. 4.90 Euros each, crap we are used to 2-2.50 Euros. We are now in Italy and our friend Clayton tells us that EVERYTHING is expensive in Italy 🙂

There are lots of people arriving. We see one guy from afar. I tell Stu that is the Italian Hulk Hogan. He is big, wearing tight tank top (or whatever the male version is called), tight jeans, a cowboyish hat, long dark hair and dark Hulk Hoganish facial hair. He walks past where we are and I get my camera ready for his return. He is too quick, was back before I got my spy camera ready. Darn. He was a character. The Venice Film Festival is on at the moment. Maybe he is some big Italian Action Star!!!

DSC_7321We find that wine in the airport is much cheaper than beer. So With a little bottle of wine, a couple real wine glasses we start a Scrabble Marathon.

Time to board the plane. We have very low expectations for this airline Volotea. One review we read said he wished he could give negative numbers for his rating. The fare was cheap and only a 2.5 hour flight, so we rolled the dice. We only booked about 24 hours in advance and were assigned seats 1A & 1B. Front row, has a bit more legroom. Bonus. The plane is a Boing 717. From other reviews people were complaining how loud the 717 is. Okay, We have been on a couple of flights in the past few years and this was no louder than some of the newer planes. The flight was on time and got us to where we wanted to go. We rate it A1.

AUTOMOBILES:
We arrive in Kos @ 1:15 AM. We are another time zone east now. There is a queue of taxis outside waiting for our flight and we get the next guy in line. We show him the address of our booked place and off we go. It is about 15 minutes and he doesn’t say a word to us. He finds the place, asks for 15 Euros and is off. Not sure if all of them are this personable or he was hoping for a fare to the far end of the island. We have had that happen in Vegas. Cab driver was not happy at the short distance we were going. I think he just about got us killed. I put my seatbelt on part way through that cab ride. Stu was in the front seat with a horrified look on his face. Breaking all the way 🙂

Maria met us at the door and showed us our accomodation. YIKES!!!! Not great. It is late and we just need to sleep. We have booked this place for 2 nights to get us started. We will find something better tomorrow!

Villach – September 2, 2015

Plan B Cafe in Villach. Just outside the train station.

OK, Plan B!  We have booked a cheap flight from Venice to Kos, the train from Villach to Venice and a hotel/apartment in Kos for the first 2 nights.  Leaving tomorrow!!

The migrant issue in Budapest has convinced us to change our plans.  We purchased flights from Budapest to Kos for September 14th back in June.  These have a “no cancellation policy”.  However the scenes we are seeing in Budapest tell us that we don’t want to be there at this time.  We feel that the cost of the additional flight will be offset by more inexpensive accommodation and meals in Greece.

Kos, is also experiencing migrant issues, but we understand that they are making their way to Europe as soon as they can.  We hope they make it safely to their chosen destination!

DSC_7292I found a geocache today, FINALLY.  I was shutout in Krakow and Vienna.  I find that Traditional caches here are a great challenge since most of them do not post descriptions or hints in English.   While I was logging this one Stu was abandoning me as I was skulking in bushes near a memorial to people lost in WWII.

We came across these loaded bicycles.  Earl and Sherron, I am sure you guys traveled much lighter than this, right???

We met Clayton and Ngosa for drinks in the center of town.  Great insights into life in Austria and Ngosa’s home country of Zambia.  She showed us some video of her with elephants roaming in her yard.  Very cool!  Maureen Sorokowski you would love it!!

The rain has come to Villach and along with it the temperature has dropped significantly.  Time to move south!!  A sign 🙂

Villach – September 1, 2015

We are having a quiet day in Villach to day.  We decided to do some laundry and found a place a few doors from our hotel.  We load up one of their 2 washers and get it going.  After that we notice the sign that tells us that it is 7.70 Euros to wash and 6.60 Euros to dry.  We rethink our idea to do 2 loads 🙂  14.30 Euros is about $21.50 CAD.  It is has been a while since we used a laundromat, I guess we are a bit out of touch.  Hahaha.

We wander about this nice little town.  It is still very warm so we seek the shady side of the street.  The mountains make us feel at home 🙂

The also have have a gorgeous river here, the Drava.  It has walkways along most of both sides.

DSC_7276

There are interesting statuary in Villach.  We see this fellow with a view of the river and lovely church just down the river.

DSC_7285

These streets are picturesque but not overrun with tourists.  A pace we are quite enjoying 🙂

We are hearing about serious problems with migrants in Hungary.  Since Budapest is where we have planned to be in the next week to 10 days, we are re planning this period.

Vienna 2 Villach – August 31, 2015

The train to Villach, Austria leaves at 10:22 from Vienna Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station).  We leave the hotel @ 9:35 to walk to the Metro and arrive at Vienna Hauptbahnhof 20 minutes later.  The train is there already so we board and get settled in.

A game of scrabble along the way proves I am unlucky. Again!! 🙁

DSC_7226We start to see some really beautiful scenery out the window of the train.  Sorry these are not up to someones standards, but I am sharing anyway 🙂  This is at a place called Unzmarkt.

DSC_7231

More Austrian country side.  Don’t you see Julia Andrews spinning and singing the “Hills are Alive” right here??

DSC_7234We arrange to meet a former co-worker from the Nortel days, Clayton Cornell, who now lives and works in Villach.  2 years ago Clayton came to Venice to meet us.  This time we are in his backyard.  He and his wife Ngosa decide we should have dinner at the castle just outside of Villach.

DSC_7255

We are up for that.  This is the view from the castle down to the city of Villach.  There are mountains on each side of this town.  A bit reminiscent of home.

DSC_7257

The views are beautiful.  The dinner is also beautiful.

DSC_7262

It is nice to have other company for dinner.  We do enjoy each other’s company, but we have only had each other as dinner companions for a month now.

It is nice to share a meal with Clayton and Ngosa!
